Democracy and Its Alternatives

February 4 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm EST

Owls Club continues its engaging and thought-provoking Great Courses Plus series with a new installment: Democracy and Its Alternatives. This compelling series delves into democracy’s definitions, duties, debates, and difficulties. With a special focus on how democratic governments have worked—or faltered—across time and around the globe, this is a must-attend series for anyone eager to deepen their understanding of governance and society.

Our journey began in Fall 2023 with Propaganda and Persuasion, a 24-week exploration of how influence shapes public opinion. We then turned to The U.S. Constitution through History, followed by the renowned Constitution 101 lectures from the National Constitution Center’s Jeffrey Rosen, who was a guest speaker at Owls last May, highlighting his book “The Pursuit of Happiness.” Next came Understanding the U.S. Government, a comprehensive guide to the structure and function of the American political system. Together, these series equipped participants with the tools to be informed and discerning voters in the 2024 general election.

Now, Democracy and Its Alternatives invites you to explore beyond the ballot box, examining how different systems of government have evolved and succeeded—or failed—to serve their citizens. Whether you’re a returning participant or a newcomer, this series offers rich discussions and fresh perspectives for everyone.
